Hermosa Tours – Durango to Moab Day 3

Back in Spring of 2012, my buddy Todd and I decided to plan a trip to mountain bike from Durango, Colorado to Moab, Utah. The trip would take 6 days, over 220 miles and 24,000 ft of climbing.

We hired the services of Hermosa Tours to ferry our gear from camp to camp and made our way on the journey.

Day 3 wasn’t particularly exciting or very interesting. That being said, any day in the saddle riding in the middle of nowhere is much better than a day spent sitting at my desk!

We rolled out of camp early in the day and headed towards our next destination in Paradox Valley. The ride was uneventful, with mostly straight gravel roads with some pavement section.

We rode through Dry Creek Basin, which was a flat, open, desolate expanse of dirt with little to no shade. The one shining gem of this part of the journey was a little cafe in the middle of nowhere. Here we had helpings of ice cream and enjoyed some air conditioning.

Todd also made good use of the facilities and it is worth noting for others traveling through here that there are also shower facilities if you plan your riding accordingly.

We were expecting this ride to be about 40 miles, but it turned out to be closer to 50. The final few miles were a brutal climb in the sun and heat and we were extremely happy when we reached camp.

Camp was the one part of this day that was simply amazing. After resting and refueling a bit, I did a little free riding around the area and managed to tear a sidewall. I was fortunately able to mount a new tire and actually got it to tubeless seal with a floor pump.

We were treated to a short shower followed by a spectacular sunset and dazzling rainbows. It was the perfect ending.

The night was gorgeous and even though I pitched my tent, I threw my pad and sleeping bag out in the open and slept under a gorgeous starry sky.
